Academic Decathlon
LHS ACADEC 2023-2024
ACADEMIC DECATHLON (AcaDec) is a full year course with Mrs. Esaili and Mr. Stewart. In class, we will study Art, Music, Economics, Literature, Social Science, Mathematics, and Science with the common theme of "Our Changing Climate." You will also make speeches (both impromptu and prepared), write essays, and learn interview skills. We will read a book, "Solar Storms" by Linda Hogan, as part of our literature unit. We have a PDF copy of this book in the modules and hope to obtain a few hardcover copies for you to start reading.
In AcaDec, You are competing for a spot on our award-winning team - only nine students are able to compete against other schools. Students are divided up by grade point averages, so you will only compete against students with similar GPAs.
Each high school enters a team of nine students. We may have 1 alternate for each category.
- 3 Honor students (3.80 - 4.00 GPA)
- 3 Scholastic students (3.20 - 3.799 GPA)
- 3 Varsity students (0.00 - 3.199 GPA)
You MUST remain academically eligible to complete (just like UIL rules)!
This is a competitive class -- you will be given packets of material to read and study, we will do activities in class to help develop deeper understanding, and then we will test. Your tests will be curved, and your scores will be compared to other students to determine who will make our competition team.
This is a challenging but rewarding class - you are guaranteed to find something you like in this course. This course teaches you to be an independent learner and to recognize the connections between fields, as well as exposes you to other intellectual students across the district and state.
Our mascot is the Alpaca, because they are the symbol of intelligence and hard work. The sound of a happy alpaca makes is "Pwaaa".
- We will all compete in our district competition in late November or early December and possibly compete in Irving in early November. Any school absences are excuse!
- We will select our competition team after district, and those students will compete in our regional competition in late January.
- We hopefully will move on to our state competition, which is held around March.
We look forward to a great year with lots of fun learning! Here is a brief outline of our topics:
- Art: The art curriculum will offer an introduction to environmental and environmentalist art.
- Economics: The economics curriculum will cover fundamental economic concepts, microeconomics, and macroeconomics and will include a thematic section on the economics of climate change.
- Literature: The literature curriculum will present an introduction to environmental literature and will include critical reading, one long work of literature, and selected shorter works. The long work of literature will be Solar Storms by Linda Hogan.
- Mathematics: The mathematics curriculum will provide an overview of permutations, combinations, algebra and statistics.*
- Music: The music curriculum will focus on the topic of music and the natural world.
- Science: The science topic will be an introduction to environmental science.
- Social Science: The social science topic will be climate change in the past and present.
Essay dates are January 14-15, 2025 and Regional Competition in Arlington, Texas on January 24-25, 2025.
