LHS ACADEC 2025-2026
ACADEMIC DECATHLON (AcaDec) is a full year course with Mr. Stewart & Mrs. Prewitt. In class, we spend the first semester preparing for the Texas Academic Decathlon Regional contest. The contest is centered around a new theme every year (this year is The Roaring Twenties) and we prepare to take tests in the areas of Art, Music, Economics, Literature, Social Science, Mathematics, and Science specific to the year’s theme. Students additionally submit an essay, participate in an interview, and give both prepared and impromptu speeches during the competition.
The AcaDec competition team is made up of 9 students who are divided into groups of 3 based on their current GPA.
• 3 Honor students (3.80 - 4.00 GPA)
• 3 Scholastic students (3.20 - 3.799 GPA)
• 3 Varsity students (3.199 GPA and below)
This means AcaDec isn’t just a “smart kids” class. A good AcaDec team is made up of people who want to be there, and want to compete!
The team is determined by a combination of performances at scrimmage events in November, tests given during the third six weeks and general class behavior.
You MUST remain academically eligible to complete (just like UIL rules)!
Course work is derived from studying the provided material for the contest. Students will need to be comfortable with reading dense material and their ability to take notes and annotate. We consistently quiz over those note sections as the year progresses to get more familiar with the material, but grading is based on the process, not the end result.
This course emphasizes your ability to independently study a large amount of material in a limited time, but allows you the opportunity to interact with material you normally would not see in traditional courses, and interact with peers you may not have met otherwise. The focus of the contest is academic, but it is our hope that you will make friends and connections that you would not have without this course!
- We participate in two scrimmage competitions in November to help determine team spots
- Teams will be determined before Thanksgiving break
- Regional competition occurs in late January
- State competition will be in March if we advance
