Posted 12/12/2017 09:05AM

Jalen Catalon headshotFor the third year in a row, a Mansfield ISD student-athlete was chosen as a finalist to receive an award that honors the top football players in North Texas.

Legacy High School’s Jalen Catalon was a final five contender for the 2017 Tom Landry Award.

The award recognizes the best high school football player within the 32 counties that make up North Texas. Recipients must also demonstrate positive character and leadership attributes.

Catalon is a safety and quarterback on the Legacy High School football team. The junior has several offensive and defensive touchdowns this season and led the team to its first state semifinal game in school history. Catalon was also named the UIL 5A defensive player of the year as a sophomore.

Although Catalon was not the lone finalist for the award, Bill Jones, the host of the ceremony, stated that Catalon was an “impressive young man” who he expects to be back at the Landry Award ceremony next year.

Honorees for the Landry Award are chosen by a voting panel of former coaches and players, members of the media and local leaders. Online public voting is also taken into account.

The ceremony will be televised Friday, Dec. 15 at 6:30 p.m. on CBS 11.

The Tom Landry Award winners in 2015 and 2016 were from Mansfield ISD high schools.
